PIMA COUNTY, AZ ( Tucson News Now) - The Pima County Sheriff's Department has released its end-of-the-year crime report and homicides are up 100 percent.

There were 20 homicides in 2016, that's double from last year when there was 10. On the flip side, there were 1,481 burglaries reported, down a little from 2015. Overall deputies responded to 120,382 calls.

As 2016 wraps up, the department is gearing up for a new sheriff. Voters made Mark Napier the sheriff-elect last month, replacing Chris Nanos.

Napier said his goal is to clean up the department, which has been under investigation for an alleged misuse of funds, money that should've been used to fight crime.

Napier said he's focused on reorganizing the department to save more time and energy can be put towards keeping the people of Pima County safe. He will take office in January.
