SAN MANUEL, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A San Manuel elementary school continues to smolder Sunday while four fire departments remain on scene in the wake of a fire that broke out around 5:15 a.m.

The San Manuel Avenue B Elementary School was locked when the San Manuel Fire chief arrived on scene and began fighting the fire, which had smoke visible and coming from the attic and air conditioning units on the north wing of classrooms, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

About an hour into fighting the fire, the main electric power panel blew up, although it wasn't supposed to have had power at the time, according to an email from PCSO spokesman Tim Gaffney.

Nearby resident Denise Sanchez said she heard two explosions around 5:30 a.m. She went outside and saw smoke and realized the school was on fire.

Investigators are working to determine how the fire started and whether it's related to others that have happened recently in the San Manuel area.

San Manuel, Mammoth, Oracle and Golder Ranch fire departments all responded to assist in putting out the blaze.
