Drivers urged to check accounts after skimming devices found at Marana gas station

MARANA, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Authorities are urging drivers to check their bank accounts after several hidden card-skimming devices were found at a gas station in Marana.

A Marana Police Department spokesman said eight devices were found at the Circle K located at 4900 West Ina Road. Thousands of people could have been affected as the station is right next to Interstate 10 and several hotels.

Sgt. Chris Warren said a Circle K employee reported seeing something suspicious when opening up the pumps Thursday morning, May 12.

Anyone who used their credit or debit card at the pumps between Friday, May 6 and 8 a.m. Thursday, should check their accounts immediately.

"It's more common to see skimming devices on the outside of the machine," Warren said. "This case is unique in the sense that the people behind this have a strong working knowledge of the computer system inside the pumps to be able to manipulate the system with the device."

Detectives have not released pictures of the skimming device.

"There's a strong likelihood that this is occurring at other places," Warren said.

He said anyone who finds fraudulent activity on their credit or debit cards should report it to their bank and authorities.
