Voluntary pistachio recall due to salmonella concern

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Lost Hills, California company Wonderful Pistachios is recalling a limited number of pistachios due to a possible salmonella concern.

Various in shell and shelled pistachios are being recalled, they were sold under the brand names Wonderful, Paramount Farms, and Trader Joe's and were sold in the U.S. and Canada.

According to a Wonderful Pistachio release, the pistachios under recall can be identified by a 13-digit lot code number, which can be found on the lower back or bottom panel of the package.  Only the specific products with these lot codes are subject to the recall.

According to a release from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the following is recommended for consumers who bought the product:

  • Do not eat and retailers do not sell recalled pistachios produced by Wonderful Pistachios.
  • These products have a long shelf life and may still be in people's homes.
  • Products can be identified by a lot code number that can be found on the lower back or bottom panel of the package.
  • Return recalled pistachios to the place of purchase for a refund.
  • Even if some of the pistachios have been eaten and no one has gotten sick, don't eat them and return the product.
  • Contact health care provider if you think you may have become ill from eating contaminated pistachios.
  • Most people infected with Salmonella develop the following signs and symptoms 12-72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria: Diarrhea, Fever, Abdominal cramps

So far 11 cases have been reported in nine states, two of which occurred here in Arizona.
