TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Within the past week, there were two fires that destroyed two homes. According to Tucson Fire Department officials, both fires were started by children that were 5 years old.

TFD tells Tucson News Now that they see about one or two of these a year, but it's rare to see two within a period of a week.

One house is boarded up after it was destroyed by a fire, displacing the family that lived there. Tucson Fire officials report a 5-year-old playing with matches or a lighter started this fire. The family was able to get out safely, but their home is gone.

Between 2007 and 2011, there were over a 11,000 house fires started by kids playing with fire in the U.S.

The National Fire Protection Association said, "43 percent of those fires were started by children under age of 5."

The city of Tucson offers a Youth Fire Setting Intervention Program. For more information click here.
