TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - It won't be long until Arizona's first Fisher House opens for families of military veterans and active-duty personnel who are hospitalized at the Tucson VA, but volunteers are needed now.

Located on the Tucson VA's campus south of I-10 near Sixth Avenue, the Arizona Fisher House will provide a "home away from home" at no cost to the families who need to travel long distances to get the care they need. It lifts the financial burden during an already stressful time.

However, the Fisher House is not able to operate smoothly without the help of volunteers or donations. According to the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System website, the VA employees one full-time manager, one assistant, and two housekeepers. Fisher House relies on the community's help to support and maintain the home.

Arizona's Fisher House is set to open to families on March 4, but officials are looking to build a good volunteer base to care for its guests now.

Volunteer work can range from cooking, doing group projects around the house, helping with guest check in, and maintaining the house. There are plenty of opportunities for Tucsonans to show their support and gratitude to service members and their loved ones.

Donation items that are continuously needed include quilts, hangers, hairdryers, alarm clocks, toiletries, and food for the guests. These and other items on the Wish List can be brought Monday to Friday starting today from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to 3601 S. 6th Ave, Bldg. 100, Tucson 85723.
