ELECTION: Rothschild re-elected; city council members hold seats

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild was elected to a second term on Nov. 3, and incumbents Regina Romero, Paul Cunningham and Shirley Scott held their seats on the city council.

According to Pima County officials, the following results include all 135 precincts and 100 percent of the mail-in ballots.

In Ward 1, Romero (D) defeated Bill Hunt (R) 36,109 votes (56.74 percent) to 27,323 votes (42.94 percent). Romero has been on the council since 2007.

In Ward 2, Cunningham (D), who has served on the council since 2010, beat challenger Kelly Lawton (R) 36,141 votes (56.75 percent) to 27,351 votes (42.95 percent).

In Ward 4, Scott (D), who has been on the council since 1995, defeated Margaret Burkholder (R) 35,032 votes (55.11 percent) to 28,356 votes (44.6 percent).

Rothschild ran unopposed and grabbed 49,555 votes (93.39 percent). 3,506 votes were cast as write-in.

The candidates who hoped to unseat the incumbents said they knew they were underdogs going into the election.

"My big thing in all of us were, 'Let's get the city in a position where it's fiscal responsibility and let's get the money in order,'" Hunt said.

The candidates said they will continue to remain active in city politics.

"I think that there's lots of room for improvement and I'm cautiously optimistic about the future and looking forward to serving," Lawton said.
