Spikes found again in manhole covers on the east side

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - For the fourth time in eight months, metal spikes have been found in manhole covers on the east side of Tucson.

So far at least 32 vehicles have been damaged by the spikes, which have been placed by unknown individuals. Luckily, the damage has been limited to busted tires but authorities are worried it is only a matter of time before that changes.

The spikes were discovered in the following three locations Thursday morning: the westbound lanes of Golf Links and Calle Cordova roads, Golf Links and Prudence roads and north of Speedway and Kolb.

According to Sgt. Pete Dugan, spokesman for the Tucson Police Department, five vehicles were damaged by the spikes.

Tucson police are asking for the public's help identifying who is setting the spikes. Tips can be called in to 88-CRIME, allowing the person to remain anonymous.

Up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of a suspect.

Authorities have said there's a significant danger of someone losing control and having a head-on crash or hitting a pedestrian or bicyclist on the busy streets.

Dugan has said the person or persons responsible for the spikes could face charges of felony endangerment and criminal damage.

Other incidents include:

On Jan. 28, at least 15 cars suffered blowouts after driving over a spike set in a manhole cover on East Golf Links Road near South Harrison Road.

On April 30, at least two cars were damaged by spikes, which were found on several manhole covers near South Pantano Parkway and South Sleepy Hollow Avenue.

On May 12, at least 10 vehicles were damaged. This time spikes were found in five locations: East Tanque Verde and North Houghton roads, East Golf Links Road and South Pantano Parkway, South Pantano Parkway and South Sleepy Hollow Avenue, South Houghton Road and East Cowhead Saddle and South Camino Seco and East Kenyon Drive.
